Around this time last year, I shared a photo of the hillside below and said I didn’t think I’d live long enough to see anything like it ever again, at least in the Sandia mountains. I’m delighted to report that I was totally wrong. I think the hillside might be even prettier this year.
Fetid goosefoot makes up the red background behind the purple asters below. It’s a beautiful flower with a terrible name.
Here’s some fetid goosefoot in focus, along with a showy goldeneye. It might not be the prettiest flower on its own …
… but it mixes beautifully with other flowers. This shot is part of the same hillside as the first photo, only from a different vantage point.
There are some other tiny red flowers which are also blooming right now. I suspect they’re another form of goosefoot, which is part of the amaranth family.
Since the colors are similar, and also because I cannot resist, I’m adding a photo from the State Fair midway as well. I went last week for the first time since the pandemic began. I love taking photos of neon lights at night, especially when motion’s involved (as with the Ferris wheel in the background).
Hope you enjoy today’s near-equality of light and dark.
Thanks for the fair pic. It reminds me to keep my commitment to never go there!
Love the nature pics.. super colors - fall is about here.

Thanks for the very cool pic from the fair! Maybe one of these days we’ll get there?
