Just three days after my trip to the still-summery Pecos, I made my annual trek out to the Del Agua Overlook in the Sandias.
The closest you can get to this particular point in a motor vehicle is Sandia Crest, about two miles south of Del Agua. You have to cover the last couple of miles on your own, either by walking or biking. There are four different north-south trails you can take to get out there and back,1 and all are mostly above 10,000 feet — which is why I consider it a somewhat difficult hike.
But it’s so well worth it when the aspens are turning. My timing was especially good this year; I love the mix of green and yellow colors, and the slightly unhinged sky. Somehow, amazingly, the leaves hadn’t yet started dropping.
The four trails are: 1) the Crest Trail; 2) North 10K; 3) Ellis Trail, joining with North 10K; and 4) Survey Trail (also joining with North 10K). This point is essentially at the junction of the Crest Trail and North 10K.
what is an 'unhinged' sky? I've not heard that term before. Love love love the fall colors!
