When I drove through Corrales a few weeks ago, on my way to the bosque, I remembered the Old San Ysidro Church and decided to swing by. It’s been years (maybe decades) since I last visited and it’s become more official than I remembered.
Built over 150 years ago, it’s now listed on both the (NM) State Register of Cultural Properties and the National Register of Historic Places. It hasn’t been used as an actual church for many decades, but is still a very pretty and well-maintained building.
It took me a few minutes to figure out how to get a shot without the sign in it.
On my way home, I passed a construction site that was so intriguing I had to screech to a halt to learn more.1
Turns out it was an Orthodox church2 in the making. At that point, it was mostly only a frame. I loved all the lines.
The construction site reminded me that so many beautiful buildings — in addition to so much other art and music — have been commissioned by religious institutions for centuries, throughout the world.
A reminder that riding with a photographer can be a dicey proposition.
It’s called All Saints of North America. You can see more (absolutely fascinating) construction photos on their website.
Have you seen the Orthodox Church being built on 4th Street south of El Pinto?
