I know there are terrible fires in California now, but in June it seemed as if flowers grew in abundance everywhere. At one point, near Yuba City, I came across miles upon miles of sunflowers.
I stopped to ask a couple of guys in a pickup at the edge of the field if I could take some photos. I realized they worked for a pollination business at just about the same time I noticed there were beehives alongside the field, as far as I could see.
Until that moment, I’d had no clue that bees could be hired to pollinate flowers. Now I wish I’d thought to ask how beekeepers get the bees to return to their hives. Do bees just naturally go “home” at the end of the day like we do after work?
I stayed with my friend Patree when I was in California. She has the most beautiful garden, along with any number of (more or less) domesticated critters. One of them is GorGeor, short for Gorgeous George. I was a much bigger fan of his than vice versa, as you may have guessed. If looks could kill….
Best wishes to you all for a happy, healthy, and safe Labor Day weekend.
Safe Labor Day weekend and just 7 calendar days to go for you :)
Beehives are for hire by any grower of crops - hives move around the states by the thousands! And yes, the bees return to their own hives and eventually are transported to their original state.
