I believe indigenous Rocky Mountain maples can be found in only one part of New Mexico, within the Manzano Mountains. Although they grow on both sides of the mountains, most folks go to Fourth of July Canyon to see them.
In fact, it seems as if almost every single New Mexican goes to Fourth of July Canyon in October. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the area is quite beautiful despite the presence of all those (other) people.
Last year I swore I’d never go back to Fourth of July Canyon because of the crowds.
Alas, I couldn’t stay away. And, in the grand scheme of things, I’m pretty happy I went back anyway.
