Snowliage is a new word that I learned while I was in Colorado earlier this fall. It’s the combination of snow and fall foliage.
During the first week of October the snow was confined mainly to the highest reaches of the mountains.
Did you notice the golden foreground in the photo above? It’s a bed of dying ferns. An up-close view of one of those ferns is below.
Here’s a snowliage photo I took back in 2014, probably before the word ever existed.
A friend and I had gone up the Taos Ski Valley Road to hike and were shocked to find ourselves in a bit of a snow squall all of a sudden. What I remember most of all is how freezing cold it was — the temperature must’ve been a good 30 degrees colder than in Taos. Our hiking plans changed abruptly and I took photos instead, at least until my fingers were too numb to function.
