My fascination with butterflies has led me to a lesser interest in other insects (such as the Pippi Longstockings). Still, cicadas have never been particularly appealing to me. They’re very large, very hard insects that seem to be in a more-or-less constant state of hysteria, buzzing loudly and zooming away whenever I get anywhere near them. But when one landed right in front of me the other day, I didn’t want to miss the chance to see what it looked like up close.
It definitely was not as colorful as most butterflies. However, I thought its eyes were fascinating (plus I now have a much greater appreciation for the term bug-eyed).
Best of all, its wings were completely transparent.
