Yesterday, Memorial Day, was uncharacteristically cool and cloudy, so I went out for a foothills hike a few hours later than usual. On the way back, I began to step over the curb into the cul-de-sac where my car was parked when I saw something that looked like this.
It was immediately beneath my foot. Two things happened simultaneously: A snake head popped up over the curb and I levitated backward several feet. I realize human beings can’t actually levitate under normal circumstances, but I can also assure you that one’s abilities increase dramatically when one has just come a few inches from stepping on (or over) a rattlesnake.
I retreated to a position behind a metal trash can about six feet from the snake and took as many photos as I could. The one below is my favorite — I love the shadow of its tongue on the concrete.
After a while the snake began to slither away, which allowed me to get out into the street for another vantage point. I continued to take photos as it slithered but then I realized it was actually coiling. I moved further away and took even more photos, which I can’t bear to look at yet. They show what appears to be one very pissed-off snake.
In retrospect, I think I was really lucky that my step was over its tail rather than its head.
Please note: I’ve changed the name of this newsletter to Everyday Magic. That’s the name my emails will come from after today.
I am so impressed that you had the presence of mind to get such great photos. And, I am glad you are ok.
