There’s been a lot of new growth on the prickly pears this year. This is something that definitely doesn’t happen every year, or even every other year. The last time I can remember it happening was seven years ago.
If you’re wondering whether those little green and pink new-growth nubs are sharp, the answer is no. They feel a bit like soft leather.
Along with all the new paddle growth, there are tons of buds this year too.
I suspect the foothills will be covered with prickly pear blossoms in the next week or two, which is why this is only the first installment of the Cactus Chronicles.
